A pitch shot is a shot played with a highly lofted club that is designed to go a relatively short distance with a steep ascent and steep descent.
When confronted with your ball just off the green on closely mowed grass most players are encouraged to use the putter first. If you can’t use the putter then consider hitting a pitch shot. If you can’t do that you may be forced to hit a shot that requires you to throw the ball high in the air, almost like a flop shot. With the pitch shot, you want to keep the ball low, bounce once and then release to the flag.
