Mark Blackburn demonstrates the proper technique to hit the flop shot.
The flop shot is not something we often use in golf but it is a shot you need in your arsenal. The flop shot is typically played to get the ball over for example a bunker that is between the golfer and the flagstick; or from just off the green when the golfer is short-sided and needs the ball to stop very quickly once it lands on the putting green. Any time the golf ball is in a position where the golfer needs to get the ball into the air quickly on a steep trajectory (such as to get over a tree between the golfer and the green), then land the ball softly on the green, the flop shot is an option to be played.
About Mark Blackburn
Mark Blackburn is the Director of Instruction and founder of The Blackburn Golf Academy at Greystone Country Club in Birmingham, AL. Originally from England, Mark captained the golf team at The University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a BS in Coaching. While playing professionally, inconsistencies and injury led him to question traditional golf teaching. From that exploration, Mark developed a teaching theory that embraces a holistic sports science approach, recognizing that there is no single solution for all golfers.
